Project Information

The 2010 - 2011 MASC Community Service Project will be announced at the 2010 Officershop.  This past year's project can be found below until the new project is released.

During the 2009-2010 school year, Student Councils across Massachusetts worked with Special Olympics Massachusetts.

The project had two purposes:

1. To encourage student leaders to become involved in volunteering with the Olympians in their area.

Setting up volunteer opportunities can be done by contacting your local Special Education Director or reaching out to your Sectional Director. Special Olympics Massachusetts is divided into Southern, Northern, and Western Regions which hold events where volunteer opportunities are available.

2. To work to incorporate Olympians into school life by celebrating achievements, allowing them to be more involved in student activities, and by spreading awareness.

As a part of this initiative, student councils in MASC will be receiving materials from Special Olympics Project Unify, a project designed by Special Olympics that works with student leadership to include Olympians more in daily life.

Also, on March 3rd, 2010 all MASC Student Councils were asked to run a "Stop the 'R' Word Campaign." Materials to run these campaigns were mailed to schools. Ideas for this day include: spreading awareness about disabilities, explaining why misuse of the 'R' word is important to stop, and having members of the entire school community sign and take pledges to stop using the word.

More information can be found at www.specialolympicsma.org or by contacting your State Executive Board.
